    The 2013 National Tour

    Hi all,

San Diego once again has the honor of hosting the National Tour. Apparently it is now called the 'Championship Tour' but for clarity I will call it the National Tour.

And yes, it IS an honor. The SCCA only puts 7-8 Tours on a year (this year 7, not counting Nationals), and hosting one is considered a feather in any Regions hat. There is very much a lot of campaigning that takes place to host one. Notice ours is called the 'Pacific Southwest Championship". That is because it draws from, and represents all of our Division of the SCCA. Technically it is not even 'ours', it is the Divisions Tour. Another reason it is not 'ours' is because it is in many ways hosted by the National SCCA office. The National office brings in several workers to supervise, including their own timing trailer, and their own tech trailer/results area tent. The true Event Chair is Sandi Brown, the Nationals Solo Operations Manager. She comes to every Tour. This gives all Tours a consistency and institutional memory that is important to a National Event.

The Tours are used as a path and 'training ground' for Nationals. Their grids and registrations and organization are patterned to be similar to Nationals. They are pretty serious events, as a local Champ is to a Practice, a Tour is to a local Champ. Grid is extremely organized. You go when you are told, and if you are not ready, you are skipped. Wrong number is a DQ.

So.....we are now on our way to another Tour. This years will take place March 30-31. That is Easter weekend, and the Sunday date is Easter Sunday. San Diego does NOT pick the date. The SCCA wants to try a holiday Tour, and we are the Region they picked.

Peter Bollenbecker and Warren Leach are repeating as Co-Chairs, Mark Duerst is repeating as Chief Steward. Our Course Designer this year is Jon Lugod. The hope is to have the main volunteers repeat their roles from last year.

Anybody can volunteer to work, even those not running. I worked two Tours before entering my first one. But the thing is, if you are down there, why not enter? It's a huge amount of fun. If you are interested in volunteering, whether you are running or just want to help, let Peter or myself know.

I definitely want to run in this. But outside of getting my first National Tour runs in, I'd like to volunteer as much as possible. I plan to be there both days. Please contact me and let me know how I can help. Thanks.

The Tour, counting set up, is four days. Thursday is partial set up day. Grid and Paddock are outlined, grid spots are marked out. The National staff shows up around 1:00 on Thursday with their trailer and tech tent, and ideally all of Grid is marked and finished. In the meantime the Course Designer and his helpers outline the course. If all goes well, the SCCA staff does their safety runs Thursday, allowing Friday morning to be dedicated to marking and numbering the cones and lining the course, although sometimes the runs are Friday morning. The Chair of the Test and Tune also usually sets up his course Thursday. Friday is a tough, busy day. Marking and lining the course, numbering the cones on the course and on the maps, getting the course maps printed up, and then opening the course for walking, normally around 3 on Friday, but sometimes earlier if the SCCA says it's OK. The Test and Tune starts at 11 sharp on Friday, ending before 4. Tech for the Tour runs from 3-7 on Friday, and check in/ registration also runs 3-7. Dinner is served at 6:00 and there is a small welcome party.

Short tech and registration Saturday morning. We start at 9 sharp.

My point is that volunteers are needed for three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Thursday is not volunteer intensive in the normal sense of the word. Course has their own team, Peter, Diane and I will do Grid. Mark, Larry, and Jeff do Paddock and maybe help Grid.

It's like a machine. And if your sleeve gets caught in the gears, it will pull your arm right in.

Since we are well versed in the Tech areas, would you like SCAT to handle tech this year?

Wanna know how a conversation goes when you ask your 30-year-old, only sister to move her wedding date? Lemme find a boot...

Anyway, represent Dead Broke Racing for us. Sorry I didn't realize they were the same date until just the other day. I'll happily be marrying my sister to her first husband.

Her first husband? That doesn't sound very promising. How many do you think she's going to have? hahaha

quite the honor. I'm gonna jump into the car DSP national class and get my behind handed to me, but I hope I even try and keep pace. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully I can get the e36 dialed in as much as possible by then

For THAT entry fee, you will need to do more than "keep pace"

Well I am going to be in a vastly inferior setup. I don't mind spending the money to support the venue. It's also our home turf and I would love go see how I do against the heavy weights. It also allows us to get our sponsors name out there as well. Do we suck? Not really, but I plan on doing whatever we can to do well.

As such the e36 is going under the knife starting feb.

Just one. But if this were her second I'd tell her the Tour comes first!

    Warren,

When should we expect to be contacted if we volunteered to help with the tour? I've got the 29th off, so I'm open to help Fri-Sun.

    Robert,

On Saturday and Sunday you would do your 'normal' Tour work assignment out on course, just like a local event. That assignment is given to you by the SCCA, and the work sheet is published online right before the event. As for Friday, just show up as early as you can, check in with me, and I will put you to work. It would be whatever needed to be done, from helping the T&T to gate to numbering the cones on course (yes, each cone gets numbered on the ground, and then written on the course maps) to lining the course.

Believe it or not, besides the T&T, Friday can be a slow day (if it's like last year). The key to Friday is getting grid and paddock done Thursday (we have a ton of experienced people here). If you can do that, Friday is mostly pretty easy, grind it out stuff. Of course, in the meantime the T&T is crazy.

Thanks a ton for the extra help.
